How to edit product pages within Shopify admin

Now if you want to customize your product pages, there are 2 ways to do that inside your Shopify dashboard. First is to use your theme’s default settings, and the second is to edit the theme’s code.

Use default theme settings

When you use your default theme’s settings, your customizes will rely on the theme you applied but there will be limitations such as:

  • Adding new sections are not available
  • Shopify’s product page sections are limited and most themes do not allow you to change how they are laid out. So if you want to add additional sections more than what is afford, it won’t be possible with the default theme

  • Layouts are fixed
  • Just like in the above section, layouts are pretty much fixed (photos on the left, descriptions on the right). You can’t change this or any of the elements on the Shopify product pages.

If you are okay with those limitations, here are some adjustments you can do:

    • Templates
    • Text colors
    • Cart page appearance
    • Button size
    • Typography

This is great if you don’t want to do any coding or hire any experts.

    To do this:

Step 1: Under online store, click Themes

Step 2: Click customize, then you will be taken to the Theme editing page

Step 3: Here you can choose Product Pages from the drop down menu

Step 4: You can start changing elements such as text colors, cart page appearance, button size, etc

Step 5: Click Save on the upper right corner

If you want to make more changes other than what your theme’s default settings is giving you, you can opt to customize your code. This will require coding and if you aren’t familiar with it, an expert.

What you need to customize code:

  • Knowledge in Liquid, HTML, CSS, JS
  • Shopify themes are written in these coding languages and it is needed for you to be knowledgeable about them before you can edit the theme code

  • Access to the theme’s code
  • First, head to Online store, go to Themes from your Shopify dashboard. Choose the Customize button to be taken to the theme editing page. After that, choose Theme actions, then Edit code on your theme editing page to access the code of your own theme.

    How to edit your code

To start editing your code, from your theme files, look for /templates/product.liquid this is the file name for your product page.

If you are someone with experience and knowledge in CSS, HTML and you already understand Liquid, then you should be able to customize Shopify theme pages on your own.

    Tips:

    • Before you editing your code, always make sure to make a backup copy of this theme so that you have something to go back to
    • You need to ensure that the changes you made are under the theme developer’s support. If not, you won’t get any support for any issues you might encounter after editing
    • Consider hiring a Shopify expert to customize your pages

Hiring a Shopify expert saves you a lot of time and saves you from the headache of having to research and learn how to code. Not to mention the fact that Shopify has its own coding language, Liquid which you’ll also need to learn.

Having a Shopify expert help you can also ensure best results. You will also be able to focus on other things because you can be rest assured that someone reliable is working on your pages.
